4 Myths About Dental Implants

4 Myths About Dental Implants | Wall Street Dentists | NYC

Getting dental implants can be life-changing. They are the most sought-after tooth replacements due to their natural appearance and their ability to function much like a real tooth.

One quick search online and you will be met with a ton of information about dental implants. Unfortunately, while much of it will be accurate, there are quite a few myths that are circulating that are far from the truth.

To help you make informed choices about your oral health, it is important to know what is true and what isn’t. Let’s debunk 4 myths about dental implants.

Myth #1: Dental Implants Do Not Last That Long

As its name states, a dental implant is implanted into the jaw bone. This means that it is surgically placed and then left to heal so that it can fuse with the bone. This implant becomes an anchor for the artificial tooth.

Dental implants can last a lifetime since once they are placed and fused successfully, they are not likely to go anywhere.

Using an abutment, a dental crown is attached to the implant. This will likely need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years, on average. However, with the right care, dental crowns have been known to last well over 20 years.

Myth #2: Dental Implants are Noticeable - and Look Fake

The dental implant itself is underneath the gum line and is not at all noticeable. This means anyone looking at your teeth will not be able to tell which have real roots and which do not.

The “tooth” part of dental implants involves the use of dental crowns. These are custom-made to match the color, size, shape, and contour of your surrounding teeth. As a result, it will blend in well without looking fake.

Myth #3: Dental Implants are Too Expensive

There is no denying the fact that dental implants are the higher-priced option when compared with other types of tooth replacements. However, it is important to look at the bigger picture.

For instance, when you invest in your oral health with dental implants, you get a long-lasting solution. Other options, including dentures, need to be replaced more frequently. This can lead to an accumulation of costs - and additional time - that may eventually exceed the price tag of dental implants.

Myth #4: The Dental Implant Procedure is Painful

Getting dental implants is not painful. It involves the use of local anesthetic so that you don’t feel any pain at all during the procedure.

The recovery may involve some minor discomfort in the day or two following the procedure, but it can easily be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
