Are Dental Implants Covered By Dental Insurance?

Are Dental Implants Covered By Dental Insurance? | DDS Group

Dental implants are the best restorative treatment for missing teeth. However, they are generally not covered in full by dental insurance. Just like various auto, medical, homeowners, and life insurance policies are different, dental insurance policies also vary. Some policies may cover up to 50% of your dental implants. Others may have a pre-set coverage limit that can save you thousands. Unfortunately, other policies may not provide any coverage for dental implants. For the most accurate information, be sure to check with your insurance company

Why are Dental Implants More Expensive Than Other Options for Missing Teeth?

Dental implants are usually the most expensive treatment for missing teeth–at least initially. When accounting for the fact that dental implants are permanent and may last your entire life, they can be more cost-effective than replacing dental bridges, or dentures repeatedly.  Because dental implants also help improve your oral health, they can save on other treatments, such as surgeries for receding gums, treatment for tooth decay, scaling and root planing for gum disease, etc.

Dental implants are more expensive than other treatments for several reasons:

Dental Implants Require Extensive Pre-Surgical Screenings

To be eligible for dental implants, you’ll need to undergo a variety of tests, including x-rays, 3D imaging, and a comprehensive oral exam. You may need to have cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans.

Dental Implants Require Surgery and a Lot of Time

Unlike traditional dentures or dental bridges, dental implants require far more of your dentist’s time and expertise, and use expensive technology. Dentists who perform dental implants often rely on cutting-edge software for precision in placing the implants properly. Moreover, the specialized surgical tools and assistance from staff during surgeries are more costly. Finally, the anesthesia required for dental implant surgery is more costly than anesthesia used when filling a cavity, for example.

Once the implants have been surgically placed, you’ll also have multiple follow-up appointments to confirm you’re healing properly, and additional appointments to affix the abutments and dental crowns.

Dental Implants are Made of Premium Materials

The implanted screws used in dental implants must be biocompatible, durable, and resistant to corrosion. To that end, the implanted screws must be made of titanium, zirconium, or other noble metals, which are more expensive than other materials.

Likewise, you will need a durable, natural-looking tooth to affix to the implanted screw or crown, which are generally made of more expensive materials such as porcelain fused to metal, gold alloys, silver alloys, and ceramic.

Dental Implants are an Investment in Oral Health and Overall Health

Patients who are living with periodontal disease or missing teeth ought to remember that good oral health is necessary for good overall health. Studies have shown that poor oral health has been linked to chronic and potentially life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease.  By improving your oral health, you improve your overall wellness and reduce your risk of other systemic diseases.
