Dentures are an option dentists use to replace multiple missing teeth. The term “denture” describes a number of different solutions, from traditional full dentures that replace an entire arch of missing teeth to partial dentures that replace part of an arch and implant-supported dentures that are anchored in place by dental implants.

Many patients are under the impression that dentures don’t look realistic or that others will notice they’re wearing them, but today’s dentures look more natural than ever. When an experienced dentist designs your dentures, no one will ever guess that your teeth are not your own!

Types of Dentures

We offer the following types of dentures at our Lower Manhattan dental practice:

Traditional Full Dentures for Edentulous Patients

When most people think of dentures, they think of traditional full dentures. These removable restorations replace a full arch of missing teeth. They have a custom-made acrylic base that is made to look like natural gums; and this base sits over your real gums. To ensure a proper fit, complete dentures are only made once your teeth have been extracted and the gum tissue has healed after your procedure.

Traditional Partial Dentures for Patients Missing Multiple Teeth on One Arch

Like a traditional full denture, this solution is removable, but because it doesn’t replace all teeth on an arch, the acrylic base attaches to your existing teeth, which creates more stability. Another option is to attach a partial denture to crowns on either side of the gap in your smile.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures can be full or partial and fixed or removable (also known as snap-on dentures or snap-in dentures). We recommend considering this option if you’re a candidate for dental implant surgery, as it prevents the bone loss in the jaw that often occurs after tooth loss.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures

Can I get my teeth pulled and dentures on the same day?

This is a procedure called immediate dentures; while it is possible to get dentures the same day you have your teeth extracted, it’s important to note that the denture you receive immediately after your extraction is only a temporary restoration until the gum tissue heals and you can be fitted for a permanent denture.

What are the best dentures to get?

These days, most dental professionals are in agreement that implant-supported dentures are the best dentures to get. By preserving the bone in your jaw, you’ll have a stronger bite, more stable restoration, and prevent facial collapse, which causes a prematurely aged appearance.

Are there dentures that don’t come out?

Yes, if you want a solution that you don’t have to remove each night, a fixed implant-supported denture is a great option.

What are the most natural looking dentures?

There are a number of options that mimic the appearance of natural teeth, but for true realism, it’s important to choose a skilled dentist like those at DDS Group. We take the time to design a custom denture that creates a balanced, beautiful smile.
